Breastfeeding – Part 3 – Right Position

Position Basics

Choose a comfortable chair with firm back support to sit upright. Your back must be straight, your lap flat and feet supported, do not lean back or tip forward. Do not sit in the bed with crossed legs; you will get pins and needles in your feet.

Positioning your baby

Raise your baby below the level of your breast. Use a pillow or breastfeeding cushion to support her weight. If the baby feels insecure she might flap her arms about during latching or, hang on for dear life with her lips clamped down on the breast.

Your baby should face you with her head, neck and back in a straight line. Her head should be tilted back slightly.

Head Support

Hold your baby by the nape of her neck with an open hand so that her head can tip backwards. Hold her head between your thumb and first finger; without creating a space between the hand and the neck.
